Posted by

VRF is the virtualization feature of Cisco on its network equipments like routers. It is also an extension of IP routing that provides multiple routing instances. The implementation of VRF lite means VRF without MPLS.

These are the commands used on how to configure your Cisco equipment to support VRF lite.

1. Declare the VRF instances.
ip vrf vrf-name – Enters VRF configuration mode and assigns a VRF name.
description any-description – Enters any description for identification purposes. This command is optional.

Router(config)# ip vrf customerA
Router(config-vrf)# description **Customer A**

2. Identify and associate that interface that will be part of a specific VRF instance.
interface type number – Specifies an interface and enters interface configuration mode.
ip vrf forwarding vrf-name – Associates a VRF with an interface or subinterface.

Router(config)# interface fastethernet 0/0
Router(config-vrf)# ip vrf forwarding customerA
